The Women’s Radio Collective was formed at CJAM in January of 2009. Our mandate is to attract, train and retain more female/female-identified volunteers within our organization to create more gender equity on the airwaves. It’s an opportunity for women to learn and develop valuable technical skills so that they can produce their own media. The collective is also a great way to meet and connect with other volunteers/mentors in a safe environment, without a huge time commitment!
The WRC is responsible for two prime time programs in CJAM’s broadcast schedule: On Monday’s from 5 to 6 PM, catch Milk and Vodka – a free-form music program, with an emphasis on female artists and disc jockeys behind the controls! On Wednesdays from 8:30 to 9 PM listen to Genesis, our weekly spoken-word program dedicated to dissecting the realm of pop culture!
If you would like further information about this project and how to become involved, please e-mail our Women’s Radio Collective Coordinator, Cassandra Caverhill, at progcjam@uwindsor.ca.
The Women’s Radio Collective holds meetings each month to meet with new members, schedule training and brainstorm story ideas. No previous radio experience is required to join! This is an excellent way to contribute to the Windsor-Detroit community, collect volunteer hours, to find and assert your own voice as a feminist and to connect with other like-minded individuals to create media that challenges misconceptions and/or stereotypes about women.
